In 2005, Troy R. Mills completed his BS at Iowa State University, in the department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, with an emphasis on Occupational Safety and Health. After which, he pursued two Masters degrees, respectively in Occupational Safety and Health and Public Health. His interests include African American Religious History and Islam in the United States.

While at the University of Iowa, Troy has worked as a Research Assistant (health services research) and Teaching Assistant (Religious Studies Department).

Outside of academic life, Troy has volunteered for various community organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and Veterans Affair Health Care System. He enjoys traveling, cultural events, music, sports, and doing art projects in his spare time.
