University of Iowa Health & Human Physiology Lecturer Dan Matheson has published an article, “NCAA Amateurism Rules May Be Under Review Following Olympics,” in Sports Litigation Alert.

The article discusses several NCAA student-athletes receiving over $100,000 for their Olympic medal wins. Although NCAA amateurism rules normally disallow such payment, there are currently bylaws that permit some exceptions for the Olympic games. Due to the high amount earned by some student-athletes, those exceptions might now be under review. In the article, Matheson asserts that if the NCAA does review these bylaws, collegiate Olympians should be allowed to retain the prize money they earn for a medal.

Matheson is a lecturer and the director of the Sport & Recreation Management program in the Department of Health & Human Physiology, part of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers about 70 majors across the humanities; fine, performing and literary arts; natural and mathematical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and communication disciplines.
