University of Iowa doctoral student Jennifer Janechek is the winner of the 2016 Bruce Harkness Young Conrad Scholar Award.

The annual award is presented to an outstanding graduate student who is writing a dissertation on Joseph Conrad—the author of classic novels including Lord Jim and Heart of Darkness—or to a recent PhD who has been teaching for five years or less and is doing research on Conrad. The award consists of $100 honorarium and a year’s membership in the Joseph Conrad Society of America. The award will be conferred at the Conrad Society’s annual dinner on Jan. 6, held during the Modern Language Association (MLA) convention in Philadelphia.

Janechek is a PhD candidate in the Department of English, part of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Her dissertation explores the influence of telephonic technologies on the prose and poetry of 19th- and 20th-century British writers.
