American Studies & GWSS Prof Susan Birrell wins NASSH Recognition Award

University of Iowa Professor Susan Birrell has received the 2016 Recognition Award (Service to Sport History) from the North American Society for Sport History. The award recognizes “exceptional contributions to the Study of Sport History.” The award was presented at the organization’s annual conference in Atlanta, Ga. on May 31.

The North American Society for Sport History was founded in 1972 for the purpose of promoting, stimulating, and encouraging the study, research, and writing of the history of sport.

Birrell is a professor with joint appointments in the Departments of American Studies and Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies. She is an interdisciplinary scholar who focuses on sport from a critical cultural studies perspective. Her recent research is in the area of sport and film, particularly women and sport films.

The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers about 70 majors across the humanities; fine, performing and literary arts; natural and mathematical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and communication disciplines. About 15,000 undergraduate and nearly 2,000 graduate students study each year in the college’s 37 departments, led by faculty at the forefront of teaching and research in their disciplines. The college teaches all Iowa undergraduates through the college's general education program, CLAS CORE. About 80 percent of all Iowa undergraduates begin their academic journey in CLAS. The college confers about 60 percent of the university's bachelor's degrees each academic year.
