Supervisor Training @ Iowa: FAQs

Q: Who is required to complete the training?

A: Any administrative staff and faculty in a regular appointment who supervise UI faculty or staff may be required to complete the new training. Affected CLAS supervisors will be notified of their requirement and reminded prior to the deadline.

Q: How will training be delivered?

A: Training modules are available in-person or via Zoom and co-facilitated with a trainer from University HR and CLAS HR and/or Faculty Co-Facilitators, session dates are available here. Sessions are also available online via My Training.

Q: What is the deadline for completing the training?

A: Current affected supervisors should complete training by December 2020.

Q: How will completion of the training be tracked?

A: Completion will be tracked in the university’s Compliances and Qualifications system available through Employee Self Service.

Q: What topics will be covered in the training?

A: Training modules will focus on creating an equitable and inclusive team culture; engaging employees to maximize performance; enhancing performance coaching, management, and documentation; and ensuring consistent hiring, onboarding, and compensation practices.

Q: Will the CLAS Dean and Senior Leadership Team be required to take the training?

A: Yes, the CLAS Senior Leadership team completed the training in Spring 2020.

Q: How many supervisors in CLAS will be taking the training?

A: There are approximately 151 supervisors that currently need to complete the training, of which more than 80 are faculty members.

Q: How much time does it take to complete the training?

A: The Overview session takes approximately 30 minutes and supervisors are being asked to take the overview session online prior to taking the other sessions, and each of the other three sessions requires about 1.5 hours to complete, so we recommend allotting about 5 hours. In-person/Zoom training is scheduled so that you can complete the training in one afternoon.

Q: I’ve taken supervisory training before – do I need to take it again?

A: Yes, all CLAS supervisors will need to attend CLAS-specific supervisor training modules this year to satisfy this training requirement.

Q: What should I do if I received an email notice telling me I am required to take the training, but I am not a supervisor?

A: If you believe you are not a required supervisor or that you have been misclassified, contact your HR Unit Rep for further clarification. Otherwise, more information on sessions and training dates will be available later this spring and will be communicated to all affected CLAS supervisors who are required to take the training.

Q: What if I become a new affected supervisor in 2020?

If your status changes in 2020, you will be added to the required list of supervisors that will need to take the training. You will be notified and provided with enough time to attend training by December 2020.
