The Office of Field Experience is actively engaged in recruiting experiential learning partners. As positions become known, links to information about available opportunities will be posted here. They could be volunteer positions, part-time, seasonal or full-time positions. Please read closely and apply to positions based on your mix of needs regarding credit, experience and compensation. It is important to remember that semester hour credit is not automatically granted for experiential learning. You must register for SRM:4197:0006, :0012 or :0EXW (Sport and Recreation Field Experience) and fulfill the requirements for the course and credits. Morton Grove Park District (northern suburb of Chicago) is seeking summer help for a variety of recreation positions. As posted, these do not qualify for field experience credit. If additional projects and responsibilities are able to be added, they could potentially qualify. These would be great opportunities to add recreation-related job experience to your resume, however.

The Western & Southern Open internships offer a rare opportunity to play a big part in a world premier professional men's and women's tennis tournament. Internship dates are mid-July - August 18th in Mason, OH, , just outside of Cincinnati. These internships could be paired with other guided field experiences like San Diego or the Iowa Wild. Cadence Sports, a full-service event management firm based out of Austin, TX, specializes in planning and execution of single and multi-day endurance events. The student who completes the 2019 Hoover Presidential Foundation Internship will get exposure planning and marketing the Hoover-Ball National Championship sporting event, in addition to Youth Hoover-Ball, apparel design, work with sponsors, create radio messages, shoot video, write stories and press releases… all kinds of communications activities. It’s a great way to explore and test the waters in many roles. The 12 week summer internship pays $3,900 and is local to Iowa City. Lakeshore Chinooks (Northwoods League) is accepting resumes and interviewing students for summer internships. They had this to say about working with UISRM students, "We have had many of your students in the past and would love to work with your students again. We feel our internship truly offers real world sports business/management experience and assign the interns meaningful duties and responsibilities. Following their internships, our hope each year is to hire on former interns into full time roles with our front office. Right now 7 out of 10 front office staff members were once interns with the hope to grow that number." Internships are available in Accounting, Communication and Journalism, Community Relations (new in 2019!), Concessions and Hospitality, Graphic Design, Marketing and Operations, Media and Video Production, Photography, Social Media (new in 2019!) and Ticket Sales. The Georgia State Games have internships available year-round and are now accepting applications for summer. If you have participated in the Iowa Games guided practicum course, you may find this particularly interesting. This organization would also be particularly well-suited for students pursuing work in event management. RipRoar Events is the largest endurance event production company in Iowa with events like the Women's Half Marathon, 5K + Team Relay, a youth triathlon series, DAM to DSM and many more. Their Event Production Internship is open for applications for spring (2/25 - 5/6, 2019) and summer (5/13 - 8/19, 2019) semesters. The Chicago Sports Commission (CSC) Internship Program provides students or recent graduates with an opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the sports tourism industry. Here is a note from our friends in Bismarck: "We have revised a few internships and even added a couple more. We have also switched to all paid internships for the 2019 season. We feel that this will help relieve some of the financial burden for students while they receive a great experience over the summer. We will continue to offer local housing for students if they need it."
Coralville Parks and Recreation - Interested in leading activities and events for an established Before/After School Program? This position is paid and may require a semester long project to qualify for credit.
The Iowa Games Foundation is expanding their popular Corporate Games competition structure from central Iowa to the corridor! This will be their inaugural year with teams of employees from competing companies vying for the title in the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area. Colorado Spring Sports Corporation has internships available in both Communications and Event Managment for spring and summer semesters. Summer applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. Apply early. Fifth Ward Saints North provides outreach to at-risk students in Iowa City through athletic, academic and social service programs. They are currently seeking Volunteer mentors, tutors and coaches. Volunteer positions do not earn credit but gain perspective & experience.
Iowa Parks & Recreation posts internships from member cities around the state. Some positions posted here may not qualify for credit so double check with the Office of Field Experience before assuming it counts.
Midwest Sports Productions, based in Kansas City, touts themselves as the powerhouse for youth fastpitch softball & baseball tournaments in the Midwest.
