My name is Kyle Bos, and I am majoring in Health and Human Physiology following the Health Studies track. I am entering my final year here at the University of Iowa graduating in the spring of 2022, and following graduation, I plan on attending Physician Assistant school. I originally went to school at Purdue University from 2013-2014 where I then left school to serve in the U.S. Army as a medic for four years, ending up here at the University of Iowa in the spring of 2019. Returning to academia felt very daunting and unnatural, but from the moment I met with my HHP advisor I knew I was in the right place. One thing I really like about the Health Studies track is that it allows me to shape my education around what I find interesting, offering a plethora of elective classes alongside the core major classes. A few of my favorite classes were Policy, Environmental, and Social Determinants of Health and Cultural Competency in Health Promotion. Both classes broadened my perspective of the healthcare system and how it affects a community, as most of my experience came from just one or two patient populations with the same determinants and access to care.
My advice for current or perspective students would be to really take advantage of what the department has to offer when it comes to electives, and don’t hesitate to reach out to the professors as s as I truly believe they want us all to succeed.
