Summer greetings to you!

The summer is in full swing and, as you will read in this installment of news from the UISRM program, students have scattered across the country to gain experience or start new jobs.  You can read about one of our Guided Field Experience courses where faculty members serve as project managers and students work as strategic or operational consultants for sports companies or teams. Guided Field Experiences were first offered through UISRM in the summer of 2012 with the San Diego Sports Consulting practicum. The program now offers up to 10 different Guided Field Experiences for students throughout the year. Our 2017 summer offerings in this format include work with the Iowa Speedway (NASCAR), Iowa Wild (AHL), Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) and San Diego Sports Consulting, this summer working with four different organizations.

Students also have the option to complete Independent Field Experience each semester. This format closely resembles an internship but can be broader and includes weekly check-ins and program support for both student and host organization. You can follow along on our summer trips and visits on Twitter (@UISportRecMgmt or #UISRM) and Facebook (UIowaSRM). You can also read students’ first-hand experiences of their Field Experiences on our UISRM Field Experience blog.

Lastly, you will find news about career moves for students, whether that is an internship, a promotion, or a recent graduate's first full-time position in the industry. If you are an alum of the program, please keep us updated on your accomplishments via email or consider joining our LinkedIn group (from your LinkedIn home page, click the WORK icon in the upper-right corner of the page, click the GROUPS icon, and search for University of Iowa Sport & Recreation Management).

If you have feedback, questions or story recommendations, please contact one of the members of the UISRM newsletter committee: Alex Voss (alex-voss@uiowa.edu), Anna Jensen (anna-jensen@uiowa.edu), and Dan Matheson (daniel-matheson@uiowa.edu).
