Outreach to the local, state, national, and international community is fundamental to the mission of the Department of Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies at the University of Iowa. Below we've collected some of the more recent projects of faculty and students.

Iowa City Community School District: Following up on Assistant Professor Sarah Bruch's important research into the experiences of LGBTQA students in the Iowa City Community School District (Dr. Sarah K. Bruch, Tessa Heeren,Austin James Dyami Adams, and Natalie Veldhouse, Iowa City Community Scholld District LGBTQ Student Experiences Multi-Stakeholder Task Force Report [University of Iowa Public Policy Center, 2018] ), two GWSS faculty members (Professor Leslie Schwalm and Assistant Professor Christopher MacMillan), along with PhD student and GWSS Graduate Certificate student Caroline Radesky, will conduct a teacher-training workshop for Iowa City Community School District's "Teaching and Learning Conference," October 5, 2018.   This interactive session will cover key concepts and terms for thinking and talking about gender, sex, and sexuality; why it matters generally, and why it matters in Iowa City; the experiences of LGBTQ students; how we can help students feel safe in our schools; what it means for a classroom to be LGBTQ inclusive; and examples of how to integrate the curriculum.
