Samford University - Assistant Professor in Geography

Samford University’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for the position of assistant professor in Geography. This is a tenure-track faculty position that will begin August 2018.  This person will teach three courses each semester. Primary teaching responsibilities would include introductory and advanced courses in Geographic Information Systems and other geospatial applications, as well as multiple sections of physical/environmental geography.

 

Ph.D. required at time of appointment. We seek a broadly trained environmental geographer with an ability to teach Geospatial technologies and physical geography.  Successful candidate will have demonstrated record of scholarship and excellence in teaching Geographic Information Systems (introductory and advanced levels), as well as courses specific to research expertise. Candidate must be committed to undergraduate teaching, student development and mentorship. Candidates must be willing to support the university’s Christian mission statement.  Academic rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

 

The Department of Geography is a small but healthy department, with 3 full-time faculty members and approximately 40 students pursuing one of our majors or minors. In addition to a B.S. in Geography, our department offers a concentration in GIS and a minor in Environmental Studies. Faculty regularly teach general education courses, as well as interdisciplinary courses in related programs such as the University Core, Global Studies and Environmental Science. The program is undergraduate only, and focuses on rigorous, liberal arts education with an emphasis on student mentorship and research. The ability to develop a research program that can involve undergraduate students is a plus.
