"Iowa's Silvia Secchi studies the complex relationship between humans and the Mississippi River Basin. She investigates the impacts that agriculture has on water, in Iowa and all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. Using satellite imagery, surveys, and samples, she studies how farmers grow crops and raise livestock. She looks for the practices and policies that can keep our water clean and our farming profitable. How do we stop algae blooms in lakes? Restore wetlands? Should we plant cover crops? Change fertilizer applications? Where? The answers will help us cherish and protect this precious resource for generations."
