Naturalist Intern

 

Reports To: Chief Naturalist    

Department: Edge of Appalachia Preserve System  

FLSA Status: Part time, hourly

Compensation: $15/hour

 

 Position Overview:

The Naturalist Intern will work with youth ages 11 through 17 on the 20,000 acre Edge of Appalachia Preserve System located in Adams County, Ohio. They will work closely with the Chief Naturalist to plan and execute two summer youth programs, Explorers Club and the Young Ecologists Training Institute (YETI). The Explores Club is a day-camp type program accommodating up to 15 youth at a time who have completed grades 5- 8. Activities can include hiking, stream surveys, fossil hunting, nature crafts and investigating insects. YETI is a project based summer program designed to allow middle and high school students to engage in field-based scientific research. The 2020 projects may involve research on local spider species and fireflies.

 

Responsibilities and Duties:

Assist the Chief Naturalist in supervising YETI participants with field research projects.

Guarantee YETI attendees’ safety by adhering to Cincinnati Museum Center’s policies.

Interacting and exploring the natural world with children ranging in age from 11-14 in an outdoor setting a safe and encouraging manner.

Leading games and craft activities.

Share in the execution of daily tasks including, but not limited to, minor cleaning, research equipment use and maintenance, and attending the general needs of children in an outdoor situation.

Help with the daily drop-off and pick-up procedures.

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Possess a basic understanding of natural history concepts and have a desire to share this knowledge with children.

Candidate must be outgoing, mature, responsible and enjoy working with children.

Be able to hike several miles in a day in hilly terrain.

Ability to work in all kinds of weather conditions with a positive attitude.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

Have an Associate or B.S. degree in OR be currently enrolled in a degree program for Natural Sciences, Nature Interpretation, Environmental Education, or related field.

Current certification in First Aid/CPR or the ability to become certified.

Be at least 18 years of age.

 

Working Conditions and Setting:

The Naturalist Intern will be working in a remote and rural area of southern Ohio. Work is conducted within the rugged, un-glaciated landscapes of southeastern Adams County and is frequently “off-trail”. The nature of the work will subject candidate to insects, ticks, heat and rough terrain.  In addition, the Edge of Appalachia Preserve System is conducting an All Taxa Biotic Index (ATBI). To this end, the candidate will be exposed to various methods of collecting and preserving specimens for the Museum’s collection.
