Human Geographer Assistant Professor - Syracuse University

The Department of Geography, the Maxwell School, Syracuse University seeks to hire a human geographer at the rank of assistant or associate professor. This is a tenure-track appointment. Ph.D. required at time of appointment.

We seek a human geographer whose research and teaching focus on some combination of the following: political geography, urban geography, or cultural geography, with special attention to questions of social justice and citizenship. We expect to hire a scholar poised to make a significant theoretical contribution to key subfields in human geography, but whose work is also empirically rooted. Candidates should demonstrate clear evidence of a strong research program moving forward and of significant promise in teaching. Applications from candidates with experience in GIS and geovisualization, who can create synergies with our programs in Community Geography and/or digital humanities, are welcome, as are applications from scholars emphasizing socially-relevant and engaged research. The most competitive candidates will see synergistic opportunities with existing strengths in our Department, as well as with the Maxwell School’s commitment to socially relevant scholarship oriented toward public engagement.

Besides contributing to the Department’s research and teaching strengths in political, urban, or cultural geography, we seek a scholar who might also contribute to initiatives across the Maxwell School. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research include the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs; the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Cooperation; the Campbell Public Affairs Institute; regional programs in the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and European Union, and others. The Geography Department maintains strong collaborative links with other social science departments and programs in the Maxwell School, as well as with scholars in African-American Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Food Studies. With the Syracuse Community Geography Program and other initiatives, the Department is a leader in publicly engaged scholarship.

The Department strongly values excellence in teaching, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses. Faculty members normally teach two courses per semester.

Applications will be reviewed as they arrive, with full consideration given to those received by October 15th, 2016. However, the department will continue to consider applications until this position is filled.
