The GIS Technician’s responsibilities include as-built interpretation, as-built posting to GIS, maintenance of the GIS database, mobile data collection support, communication with field operations and engineers, map production, occasional CAD work, and other miscellaneous projects as directed by the GIS Supervisor of Gas Distribution Mapping and the Manager of GIS Support.

PAY RANGE:   $20.17 - $30.38 per hour (Determined by the knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Maintain the Esri Gas GIS database as well as quality check the data for inaccuracies. 

Interpret gas transmission & distribution as-built drawings and post to GIS.   

Understand Gas GIS operations and engineering processes as well as the gas assets and their functions.

Support the Digital As-built program.  This means managing and support the system as well as training and support its usage in the field.  Produce maps as required for Operations and Maintenance activities, system analysis, marketing, growth projects, etc.

Effectively communicate with staff at all levels regarding GIS.

Check accuracy of mapping system via field verification.

Diagnose software/hardware compatibility issues related to GIS products.

Utilize Esri tools such as ArcGIS (ArcMap & Pro) Desktop, desktop extensions (e.g. APR), ArcGIS Server, and Esri Portal in order to perform above job functions.

Provide feedback on above tools and processes in an effort to continuously improve BHE Gas as-builting accuracy, completeness, and efficiency.  

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in geography or geographic information systems, CAD, Utility Engineering or computer science preferred. 

One (1) year of experience using Esri Desktop and Server/Portal based software required.

Experience updating and maintaining a gas utility GIS preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Basic knowledge of Esri GIS systems and principles.

Basic knowledge of relational database management (RDBMS) concepts.

Basic knowledge of gas distribution systems.

Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; ability to prepare and give presentations and trainings.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision.

Proficiency in computer applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Outlook and various specialized software.

Ability to think and act independently and develop creative, analytical solutions to resolve complex problems.

The employee may occasionally (less than 33%) be required to: climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull and reach. Employee must be able to operate routine office equipment including computers and similar equipment. Must be able to routinely perform this work for an average of 6-8 hours per day and occasional extended hours as necessary. Must be capable of regular, reliable, and timely attendance. 

Specific lifting abilities required by this job include: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or continuously to lift, carry, push, pull or sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

Work environment: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise level. Must be capable of up to 10% travel (e.g. 2 days/month) by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities. Travel will be necessary to conduct the duties of this job, and the employee must have the ability to drive and have proper licensing.
