GIS Intern - Dexter, MI

Ducks Unlimited in Dexter, Michigan has an opening for two full-time, paid GIS Interns for 12 months. The GIS Internship will be based in the Great Lakes/Atlantic Regional Office in Dexter, Michigan, and requires GIS experience with ESRI products and a background in natural resources, wetlands, and wildlife. The position will report to Mathew Halliday, GIS Analyst.

Ducks Unlimited, Inc., is the continent’s leader in waterfowl and wetlands conservation. DU has conserved more than 15 million acres across the continent and employs over 600 employees nation-wide. DU has been using advanced GIS and remote sensing technologies since 1984 to manage the complex issues in wetland and waterfowl management, land-use planning, and environmental conservation. 

Responsibilities: DU has an immediate need for someone to work with a team of GIS professionals to update the National Wetlands Inventory within the Great Lakes, Gulf coast, and U.S. territories in the Caribbean.

May include:

  • Assisting with a variety of GIS projects using datasets throughout the Great Lakes and Eastern Coastal region
  • Assisting project biologists and support staff with mapping needs

Term: Start in early July 2022 for 12-month assignment

Work conditions: Primarily based in an office setting. Majority of the work will be performing GIS computer tasks. Opportunities for travel and fieldwork: 2-3 weeks maximum spread out over the course of the year.

Remote work: Remote work is not available for this position. GIS Interns are required to work full-time at our regional office in Dexter, MI.

Qualifications: We are looking for a person with a demonstrated background in natural resources, GIS, and remote sensing. Some experience with databases, wildlife management, and wetland ecology is preferred.

Technological proficiencies: 

  • Computer troubleshooting skills – preferred
  • Cartographic design – preferred
  • Show experience with Microsoft suite, including Excel, Word and Power Point

Analytical skills: 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of GIS/remote sensing concepts and methodologies
  • Wetland classification and identification skills (preferred)
  • Visual interpretation of digital orthophotography
  • Implementation of GIS workflows in data production

Interpersonal skills:

  • Be a self-motivated, conscientious individual who can work independently with minimal supervision 
  • Collaborate effectively with Ducks Unlimited biologists, engineers, fundraising, and other GIS staff
  • Show a willingness to learn

Communication skills:

  • Show essential oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Engage a variety of stakeholders

An ideal candidate will have an interest in and knowledge of waterfowl and/or conservation.

The successful candidate must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, per the Safer Federal Workforce Task Force COVID-19 Workplace Safety - Guidance for Federal Contractors and Subcontractors. Upon employment, he/she will be required to show proof of full vaccination, or apply for a medical or religious exemption from this requirement.

Compensation: This is a paid internship, the rate of pay is $17.00 per hour
