Environmental Justice and Communications Intern

Hours: 9 a.m.—5 p.m. [flexible]

Location: New Haven

Compensation: $11/hour

Description:

Save the Sound leads environmental action in your region. We fight climate change, save endangered lands, protect the Sound and its rivers, and work with nature to restore ecosystems. We are looking for a student who wants to effect change using their skills in videography, photography, design, social media, communication data analysis, writing, and/or community organizing and outreach. Internship projects would include, but not be limited to creating short topical videos, building our photograph library, and organizing other like-minded youth to advocate to advance our ongoing advocacy efforts on statewide issues, like, equitable climate policies, fossil fuel reduction measures, healthy waters initiatives, endangered land protection, and expanding our college and high-school youth engagement program. This person will also help coordinate and build coalitions with Save the Sound’s existing and potential partners (organizations and individuals).

This position is supervised by the Climate Advocate, and will work closely with the Director of Communications, and other program staff and interns to make real and lasting progress in the fight towards an environmental just future that protects the land, air, and water for all.

This person should be self-motivated, organized, have the ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines effectively and an excellent communicator. They should enjoy working in a team atmosphere of diverse people and have strong interpersonal skills. Strong writing skills are a benefit.

This internship program is designed to provide young adults from underrepresented groups with the opportunity to work in an environment that combines a deep-dive into a real-world conservation projects with a broad introduction to major conservation issues. Our offices are easily accessible by public transportation and a car is not a necessity.

Potential Duties

• Assist the Climate Advocate

• Communications

• Create video and graphics products [all equipment/software to be provided]

• Draft emails, blogs, and social media posts

• Analyze/benchmark data from communications efforts

• Project Management

• Develop program strategies with the Climate Advocate

• Manage the direction of a project to realize the organization’s strategic goals

• Assist with community outreach, organizing, and relationship building

• Attend public meetings and forums • Coordinate with environmental justice and youth climate organizations

• Table at events during the summer

Helpful Qualifications

• Desire to combat the climate crisis and environmental injustice, most notably the impacts on minority and/or lower-income groups and communities

• Experience working/volunteering with diverse and under-represented groups

• Ability to work independently, be organized and meet deadlines

• Familiarity with applications such as Word, Excel, social media, simple video editing/posting
