Description of Job

BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION

This position exists to apply concepts, principles, and techniques of professional cultural
resource management to the administration and management of cultural resource data. The
employee is responsible for ensuring that the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation
(OAHP) stewards and manages its data in conformation with state and federal law, established
ethical standards, and best practices in information management. Specific duties include, but are
not limited to, review of new and legacy cultural site and survey information for data accuracy
and incorporation of that information into the OAHP computerized database and the Geographic
Information System (GIS). This position is a member of a team working on creative and
innovative solutions to initiate electronic receipt of cultural management information by the
OAHP.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Update and maintain database information
2. Update and maintain a Geographic Information System (GIS)
3. Scan cultural resource forms
4. Provide technical assistance
5. Assist in the development of methods to improve the production performance.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Keep abreast of statutes, regulations and guidance affecting the position's responsibilities.
Independently monitor and comment in writing and in oral communication when appropriate on
developments in archaeology and historic preservation. Apply a wide range of qualitative and
quantitative methods to assess and improve the office's effectiveness and the knowledge of
federal and state agency staff members as well as the interested public. Independently monitor
changes in technology that may improve or otherwise affect the work of the agency.

 

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

This position requires a bachelor's degree in Anthropology, History, or Historic Preservation.

Substitution for education can be a combination of full-time work experience in archaeology, history or historic preservation which provided the same kind, amount and level of knowledge acquired in the required education, may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the bachelors degree only.

Must have at least six months of supervised field and analytic experience in archaeology, history or historic preservation, preferably in the western United States, including Colorado or Wyoming. Must have knowledge of cartography (map scale, projections, datums) and the skills to analyze complex cultural resource and geographic data derived from site forms and documents pertaining to the management of cultural resources, as well as the ability to use GIS.

The successful applicant will also have the ability to use computer hardware, networks, and associated peripherals, and to use the internet to acquire and/or distribute digital data. Experience

with computerized databases is required.

Highly Desirable: 

Experience working with Site files database and ESRI suite of GIS programs.
