Theresa Maria Oehmke, 87, died Sunday November 6, 2011 at UIHC.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30, Friday November 11, 2011 at the Newman Center with Father Ed Fitzpatrick and Fr. Phil Schmitter officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 6 pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where a Vigil Service will be held at 4pm, and after 9:30 am Friday at the Newman Center. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Newman Center, 104 E. Jefferson St, Iowa City, IA 52245 or to the St. Francis Prayer Center, G-2381 E. Theresa was born on January 20, 1924 in Abruzzi, Italy, the daughter of Giovanni and Mary Madonna Chiaverini. On December 30, 1950 Theresa married Robert Oehmke in Detroit, Michigan. She received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and her PhD in Mathematics Education from the University of Iowa.

Theresa was the founder of the University of Iowa Mathematics Tutorial Lab, where she was the director for many years. She was a member of the Newman Center and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Survivors include her son, James (Patty) Oehmke of East Lansing, MI and their children Teri and Alex. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, and her sister, Sister Joanne IHN and her brother Roger. Online condolences may be sent to www.lensingfuneral.com.
