Mary Lou Doyle (1946-2012)

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences mourns the loss of Mary Lou Doyle, who served in key staff roles in the CLAS Dean’s Office from 1984 to 2010.  Mary Lou died on April 2, 2012.

Mary Lou’s professional career was devoted to the College’s work in recruiting and mentoring faculty.  As the Assistant to the Dean for Faculty, she was the College’s staff liaison with departments engaged in faculty searches, organized the annual CLAS New Faculty Orientation, and coordinated the College’s faculty review processes, including reviews for promotion and tenure.

Raúl Curto, CLAS Executive Associate Dean, said of his colleague, “For more than a quarter-century, Mary Lou was an invaluable asset to the College, and served as my mentor and guide when I came to the Dean’s Office 16 years ago.  Mary Lou was a champion of the diversity in which the College takes such pride, and selflessly attentive to the needs of our departments and faculty."

Before her appointment in the CLAS Dean’s Office, Mary Lou served as an editorial assistant in the Department of Religious Studies (then the School of Religion) and as a researcher for the Encyclopedia Britannica. Mary Lou also taught at the Notre Dame High School for Girls in Chicago.

Her research as a genealogist resulted in the Library of Congress accepting her work for placement in their Family History Section.

No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Johnson County Food Bank, 1121 Gilbert Ct, Iowa City, Iowa 52240, where Mary Lou was a volunteer.

Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.lensingfuneral.com.
