Graduate Council Candidates 2024

The 2024 CLAS Faculty Governance Elections are scheduled to run from 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, to midnight on Wednesday, May 1. Please contact Lisa Gray with any questions or problems concerning the faculty elections.

The Graduate Council meets every two weeks while school is in session. The Graduate Council serves as the executive committee of the graduate faculty, assisting and advising the dean in the conduct of college business. (see the Manual of Rules and Regulations of the Graduate College, Section XVI). CLAS has three dedicated seats on Graduate Council, each filled by a faculty remember from one of the four CLAS Electoral Groups. Each year, CLAS faculty elect a new representative from one of the Electoral Groups. This year the candidates are from the Natural and Mathematical Sciences (Electoral Group I). View the entire membership of the Graduate Council.

Voting faculty from all four electoral groups may vote on this ballot.

CANDIDATE STATEMENTS

John Logsdon
Associate Professor, Department of Biology
PhD, Indiana University
Joined UI faculty in 2003

In many ways, graduate students are the heart of every research university. Graduate students are deeply integrated in most—if not all—aspects of knowledge generation and dissemination. They sometimes find themselves straddling and traversing many roles from student to teacher, from trainee to trainer, from implementing others’ ideas to generating and implementing their own. As a faculty member, I have taken very seriously my many roles in teaching, supervising, advising and mentoring graduate students. In addition to my frequent and ongoing service to graduate recruitment and admissions, I am proud to have successfully guided a diverse group of 12 PhDs and 6 MS students to complete their degrees. I have served multiple times on NSF’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) review committee and have used my expertise to help UI students prepare and submit their applications to this prestigious program. As a member of the UI Graduate Council, I would bring a heart-felt appreciation and understanding of graduate student needs, with a focus on what UI can do to facilitate their success in the manifold—and sometimes competing—roles that they play. I will also promote efforts for the UI to make improvements in funding, recruitment and professional development that will make this a more attractive destination for graduate study and research.

Training graduate students and getting them ready for the next step requires  a complex combination of faculty, department and college support. I supervise and support as RAs a significant number of graduate students in my research group. I have had a perfect record of graduation for 34 years and a very good placement record in academia and industry. A good fraction of the classes I teach are introductory or advanced graduate courses. I have a good understanding of the needs for recruitment, retention and dissertation completion in our college and would be happy to participate in the Graduate Council effort to make forward progress.
