Re: Research I and AAU member universities

As you know, the Guidelines for Tenure and Promotion, Section I.D.2.(c), provide for the Departmental Executive Officer to solicit from the candidate a list of appropriate external reviewers from peer institutions. AAU, Big Ten, major public, and Carnegie Research I institutions are mentioned as examples of peer institutions. Two years ago, I sent you a list I compiled to assist in identifying these peer institutions. That list is now out of date. Rather than compiling a new list which eventually also will be out of date, I am providing you with links to the AAU and Carnegie sites, so that you can check their current classification or membership as needed. You may want to save this memo in your P&T file for future use.

Note also that appropriate external reviewers may be identified also from institutions in which the corresponding department or individual evaluator is of peer quality, even if the institution itself does not appear on one of these lists.
