David Belgum

Dr. David Belgum, former Director of the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at UIHC and professor in the Department of Religious Studies, then School of Religion passed away on April 12, 2007. He was Director of the CPE program from 1964 until his retirement in 1987. In the School of Religion, he taught such popular courses as Religion and Personality, Psychological Perspectives on Religion, and Religion and Health. Dr. Belgum received his PhD in Psychology of Religion from Boston University in 1952 and completed training in Clinical Pastoral Education at the University of Michigan.

Throughout the years he traveled to China, Pakistan, Mexico, Iceland, and Papua, New Guinea to study the cultural approaches to medical treatment. Dr. Belgum authored thirty-two books and booklets, including most recently "Dealing with Death, Dying, and Mourning," published in 2006. His last work, editing "Living with Parkinson's Disease," will be published this year.

The faculty and staff of the Department of Religious studies will miss David who always took time to attend departmental events. We send our sincere condolences to his wife Kathie and his children, Karl, Kurt, and Kit.
