Instructor Absences

Instructor Absences

Faculty ordinarily arrange for coverage of teaching and office hours during a brief illness or when a planned absence from teaching a course will occur, such as for travel related to research activities. The DEO should always be informed of these absences as soon as possible.

  • Before the semester or session begins, DEOs should take steps to ensure each instructor has a substitute who can continue with instruction in these cases.
  • The  DEO or Director should also consult with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education or the Associate Dean for Graduate Education if instructor must be absent for a longer period of time or in any emergency situation.
  • The Associate Deans can help to provide solutions while communicating with concerned students and others affected by the emergency.
