What was it like to be a black student at the University of Iowa between the 1930s and the 1960s? Drawing on research from their edited collection, Invisible Hawkeyes, Lena and Michael Hill show that during these decades, the UI’s growing reputation for excellence in the arts and athletics coincided with a period when more African Americans arrived on campus. The presence of accomplished black coeds performing in musical concerts, participating in visual art exhibitions, acting on stage, publishing literature, and competing on sports fields forced white students, faculty, and staff to confront their undeniable intellect and talent. As these students’ contributions reached audiences on campus, in the city and the nation, and around the globe, they contributed significantly to the progress of the Civil Rights Movement. By examining the collisions between Iowa’s polite Midwestern progressivism and black students’ determined ambition, this talk demonstrates how fraught moments of interracial collaboration, meritocratic advancement, and institutional insensitivity deepen our grasp of America’s painful conversion into a multiracial republic dedicated to racial equality.
