My research is an attempt to reveal what sorts of processes occur in the mantle during the phenomenon of subduction initiation. In order to complete this task, I am analyzing glass samples, minerals, and mineral inclusions to study trace element systematics during the subduction initiation process. These samples are from a core drilled into the Izu-Bonin forearc south of Honshu, Japan. I will be using electron microprobe and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to gather major and trace element data from these samples. The goal is to use these data to describe how the mantle changes over time throughout this process and to infer what how these rocks on the surface came to be.
