As we approach the midpoint of the semester, please remember to report undergraduate academic misconduct as soon as possible.

Your reports help to stop cheating, with word quickly passing from student to student that misconduct has consequences.

We generally receive around 300 reports a year; very few students have a repeat offense.

Students understand that academic misconduct is unfair to their peers, their professors, and to the University of Iowa.

Procedures for Reporting Misconduct: Three Steps

  1. Be sure to email the student first about the problem and request a meeting, using the uiowa.edu address.
  1. If at all feasible meet with the student. If there is no response to your email within 24 hours, please move to step 3.
  1. Use this online form to report the incident to the College. Upload any documentation to the form that you might have. Please include your name and email address on the form so we can copy you on our response to the student.

Sanctions from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
Please note that different colleges have different sanctions.

Regardless of college, the instructor applies the first level sanction, which is generally a 0/F for the involved assignment or test.

For students with their primary college in CLAS, the second level sanction is applied by CLAS:

  • For a first offense, students must complete an academic integrity seminar; the seminar costs $100 and takes around 18 hours to complete.  The student may be asked to discuss their seminar answers with us.
  • A hold is put on the student’s future registration until the seminar is completed.
  • For a second offense (or an egregious first offense), a student is suspended for one academic year. Around 7 students are suspended each year.
  • For a third offense (or for a very egregious first offense), a student is expelled. Generally, these numbers are very low, such as 1 or 0 students a year.

More information on the CLAS policy and procedures related to academic misconduct can be found on this page. If you have questions, please consult with Kathryn Hall in my office.

Thank you.
