The CLAS Diversity Committee and the Undergraduate Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee (UEPCC) have approved an addition to the required CLAS syllabus, below:

Nondiscrimination in the Classroom

The University of Iowa is committed to making the classroom a respectful and inclusive space for all people irrespective of their gender, sexual, racial, religious or other identities. Toward this goal, students are invited to optionally share their preferred names and pronouns with their instructors and classmates. Expressions of hate and bigotry directed at individuals or identities are not acceptable. For more information, contact the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, diversity@uiowa.edu or visit diversity.uiowa.edu.

The intent of the addition is to remind the University of Iowa community of the importance of respect and inclusiveness within the classroom.

The statement has been added to the CLAS online syllabus insert, which is available for all faculty to copy and paste into the syllabus.

The new statement has also been added to the online CLAS syllabus template in case an instructor would like to use that syllabus format.

Starting with Fall 2017, the nondiscrimination statement is required on the CLAS syllabus.
