Background Information
CLAS undergraduate students who entered UI during Summer 2017 and after are held to the new General Education (GE) requirement of Diversity and Inclusion (DI, 3 s.h).

This DI requirement adds 3 s.h. to the CLAS GE Program for newly admitted students. CLAS needs additional seats in Diversity and Inclusion so that students may fulfill this requirement.

  • Courses may be offered by any department or program, regardless of discipline, as long as the proposed course meets the GE comprehensive and DI outcomes and uses the required GE course attributes.
  • Transfer credit is not accepted for the DI requirement.

Call for GE Proposals: Diversity and Inclusion

  • Courses do not need to be previously taught since this involves a new GE area.
  • All proposals to add DI GE status to a course must show that students have ample opportunities to fulfill the GE comprehensive and DI learning outcomes; all proposals must also show that the required course attributes are used.
  • Proposals for the next academic year are due on September 3, 2018 or on January 16, 2019.
  • More information on creating a GE proposal for DI status is at this link.
  • Additional General Education policies may be found at this link. For example, all GE courses must be numbered below 3000 and are only approved for ONE GE area.
  • A course already with GE status moving to the new Diversity and Inclusion area must be renumbered and given a new title to reflect the changes made in the course to meet the Diversity and Inclusion outcomes.  Exceptions are not made to this policy.

I encourage you to consult with Kathryn Hall in my office while drafting the proposal for GECC.

We welcome your questions and a discussion about the requirements for courses in Diversity and Inclusion.

Thank you for your help and for your interest in General Education.
