As the end of the semester approaches, we see more students who turn to cheating as a problem-solving strategy. Please report academic misconduct, giving us the opportunity to discuss related problems with the student.

Sometimes the best thing that can happen to a student is that they are finally caught—and that someone cares.

Procedures for Reporting Misconduct

  1. Be sure to email the student about the problem at the uiowa.edu address.
  2. Meet with the student if at all possible to discuss the student’s situation.
  3. Use this online form to report the incident to the College.
  4. Upload any documentation to the form that you might have.
  5. You will be copied on the official letter we send to the student after the outcome has been decided.

Sanctions from the College

For a first offense, students must complete an academic integrity seminar before they may register for UI courses; the seminar costs $100 and takes around 18 hours to complete. The student may also be asked to discuss their seminar work with us.

For a second offense (or an egregious first offense), a student is suspended for one academic year.

For a third offense (or for a very egregious first offense), a student is expelled.

Every semester, we suspend students—and they often return in the following year as more mature individuals, graduating successfully.

Thank you. We are very grateful for your help.
