The Dewey Stuit Fund in CLAS is an endowed fund created by friends and former colleagues of the College's longtime former Dean, Professor Dewey Stuit (1948-1977). The purpose of the fund is to promote the development of mentoring between CLAS undergraduate students and faculty.

Students, faculty members, and academic units may request funding for projects that will advance the extracurricular research, scholarship, and creative work of undergraduate students.

Scholarships from the Dewey Stuit Fund may support:
• Undergraduate student travel to disciplinary conferences, workshops, archives, or other sites, either to present their work or to advance their research or creative projects.
• Direct expenses related to undergraduate research with a faculty mentor (e.g., software, equipment, participant fees, etc.).

Proposals must be made in advance of the need. Awards to students average $500.

Eligibility:
• Student must be enrolled primarily in a CLAS degree granting program and seeking their first undergraduate degree.
• Student must be sponsored by a CLAS faculty member.
• Current ICRU fellows are not eligible. Former ICRU fellows are eligible to apply.

Renewability:
• This scholarship is not renewable.

Application:

(1) Student submits:
• an email to clas-scholarships@uiowa.edu with their name and university ID number and the name of their faculty mentor (who should also provide an email).
• A one-page (maximum) description of the project including specific information on how the requested funds will advance the student's research or creative goals.

(2) CLAS Faculty mentor submits:
• an email to clas-scholarships@uiowa.edu confirming that the student will be doing research under their guidance and a short statement of endorsement of the student and the research project (this does not need to be a formal letter of recommendation).

Note on group application:
• For proposals involving small groups of students, faculty sponsors please submit one application on behalf of the group that is emailed to clas-scholarships@uiowa.edu. Group application must include each student’s full name, email, and UID number.

Disbursements:
• CLAS UP will arrange for the disbursement of funds from the award directly to the student’s account. If the student is receiving financial aid from the UI Office of Student Financial Aid, the scholarship award could affect their other financial aid. If it does, the UI Office of Student Financial Aid will notify the student of any changes.

Deadline:
• Rolling: applications will be reviewed in the order they arrive.
Friday, April 21, 2023 is the last day for students to submit a request for participation in research or conference attendance in spring 2023.
