Background Information
CLAS undergraduate students entering UI beginning with Summer 2017 and after will be held to the new General Education (GE) requirement of Diversity and Inclusion (DI, 3 s.h.).

This DI requirement adds 3 s.h. to the CLAS GE Program for newly admitted students.

  • Courses may be offered by any department or program, regardless of discipline, as long as courses meet the GE requirements and DI outcomes.
  • The need for additional DI courses will gradually increase over the next four years as each cohort of new students arrives on campus.
  • Transfer credit is not accepted for the DI requirement.

Call for GE Proposals: Diversity and Inclusion

  • Courses do not need to be previously taught since this involves a new GE area.
  • All proposals to add DI GE status to a course must show how students will achieve the GE comprehensive and DI learning outcomes as well as the required course attributes.
  • Proposals are due by September 15, 2017 and are placed on the agenda of the General Education Curriculum Committee (GECC) in the order received.
  • More information on creating a GE proposal for DI status is at this link.

I encourage you to consult with Kathryn Hall in my office while drafting the proposal for GECC.

Additional Information about GE Changes

  • Newly admitted students entering UI Summer 2017 and after will also complete the new Values and Culture GE requirement (3 s.h.) rather than the current requirement in Values, Culture, and Diversity (3 s.h.).
  • If you offer GE courses in the VSD area focusing particularly on diversity issues, please consider applying for the new DI status.
  • GE courses are now approved for only one GE area.
  • Continuing students will not be held to the new requirements but will complete the requirements that appear on the student’s degree audit.

We welcome your questions and a discussion about the requirements for courses in Diversity and Inclusion.

Thank you for your help and for your interest in General Education.
