The University will return to its primary goal of offering a residential, on-campus experience for Spring 2022.

CLAS expects that courses for Spring 2022 will be scheduled in person and that very few courses will have an online or hybrid modality other than courses that already have an online (EX*) designation with Distance and Online Education.

Below are the guidelines for course planning for Spring 2022:

  • Courses will be scheduled as in-person offerings in classrooms using full capacity regardless of course enrollment.
  • Courses that have enrollments larger than 150 students no longer need to be scheduled for online delivery of the lecture component.
  • Courses that have been approved for EX* will be scheduled as online courses with Distance and Online Education.
  • The available delivery modes remain as face to face (in-person instruction), online and hybrid. However, the Registrar has redefined hybrid modality as a “flexible course where students have both face to face and virtual instruction.” (i.e., hybrid with rotation and hybrid without rotation are no longer approved modalities).
  • The course planner for Spring 2022 closes for editing on July 7th.

Requests for changes of modality – from in-person to online or hybrid delivery mode – for Spring 2022 must be forwarded to the appropriate Associate Dean (see below) and approved by them. Please feel free to consult first with the Associate Dean before putting the request together.

  • Requests should be received no later than Monday, June 28, 2021. Responses to these requests will be returned by Friday, July 2, 2021 for course planning.
  • Requests for undergraduate courses should be sent to Associate Dean Cornelia Lang (cornelia-lang@uiowa.edu).
  • Requests for graduate courses should be sent to Associate Dean Christine Getz (christine-getz@uiowa.edu).
  • Only requests for changes of course modality to be implemented in AY 2021-22 are being considered at this time.
  • If a course was approved for a change of modality for Fall 2021, there is no need to request the change again for Spring 2022. However, we will be reassessing the online status for courses whose modality changed for AY 2021-22 for delivery in Summer 2022 and beyond.
  • Requests must include a short proposal from the course instructor that demonstrates the following key attributes of the course structure and delivery format:
    • DEO endorsement describing how the online or hybrid course delivery format will benefit the overall curriculum.
    • Learning objectives of the course aligned with the delivery format.
    • Synchronous components integrated into the course to encourage student engagement, such as instructor led activities before, during, and after a lecture.
    • High quality, up to date lecture recordings available for students to review.
    • A well-designed ICON site, easily navigated by students.
    • Additional student engagement activities scheduled throughout the semester, such as discussions, activities, presentations, polling, and breakout rooms.
    • Clear communication strategies for staying in touch with students, such as a question/answer board, review sessions, group office hours, or other means that assure students that the instructor is deeply involved in the course.
