In accordance with the Operations Manual and Collegiate policy, “the faculty member has a responsibility to participate in the day-to-day operations of the University” (Operations Manual, III-15.5), including being available for students and for departmental responsibilities during the entire academic year. These responsibilities imply that the faculty member must reside at a proximity to campus that makes it practical for them to be available on a daily basis for teaching, advising, collaboration, service, attendance at faculty meetings, and participation in the life of the department, College, and University. The same policy is applicable to graduate appointments.

If a faculty member, graduate assistant, or recipient of the Lulu Merle Johnson Fellowship, Graduate College Iowa Recruitment Fellowship, Iowa Arts Fellowship, Iowa Performance Fellowship, or a pre-comprehensive Pelzer Award is requesting to perform the functions of their assignment outside of the vicinity of the University of Iowa campus, they must request this arrangement through their DEO, Area Associate Dean, and Associate Dean for Graduate Education (if graduate student).  Requests should be submitted to the department HR representative for collegiate review by the Associate Dean(s) and submission to the Provost Office.
