As you know, the University of Iowa canceled classes from 5 p.m. Tuesday, January 29 through 12 p.m. Thursday, January 31 for the Iowa City campus.

Information for instructors on how to handle classes missed because of this UI cancellation is available on the CLAS Teaching Policies and Resources page.

Please keep these guidelines in mind:

During the closure, do not assign additional reading or assignments in an attempt to compensate for the closure.

After the closure is over, faculty may choose to offer make-up exams, labs, discussions, and lectures if feasible, but they are not required to do so.

When deciding whether or not to reschedule these activities, please keep in mind the complexity of students' schedules and the possibility that not all members of the class will be able to attend a make-up session.

Faculty may instead decide to compress or omit material or exams on the syllabus; this is may be the best choice in many cases and is acceptable as long as students are equipped to continue with the next course in a sequence.

Please keep in mind that any of these changes might also result in modifications to grading policies as stated in the syllabus; any changes to grades and how they will be computed should be both clear and fair to students without penalizing them for the missed activities.

Thank you and please let me know if you have questions. I am always happy to consult with you on these matters.
