RE: Change in the Merit Raise Review Process

Dear CLAS DEOs, Departmental Administrators and Faculty Members:

Consistent with the actions taken by the great majority of UI colleges, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is permanently shifting the merit raise review process from the spring semester to the fall semester.  Thus, in calendar year 2019 the merit raise review process will take place in Fall 2019, with salary increments effective January 1, 2020.

Since this is the first instance of the shift, the review will cover the period starting January 1, 2018 through the end of Summer Session 2019; that is, in this first instance, the performance period will cover Spring 2018, Summer 2018, Fall 2018, Spring 2019, and Summer 2019.  In the future, the performance period will cover the Fall, Spring, and Summer immediately preceding the merit raise review.  (Some departments may require longer time periods, possibly up to three-and-one-half-years long.  You should expect your DEO to alert you to a longer period, if applicable to your academic unit.)

In preparation for the merit raise review, all permanent CLAS faculty (tenured, tenure-track, clinical track, and instructional track) will be asked to update their APR by September 3, 2019.  A reminder will be sent in late Spring 2019.

DEOs will be asked to run merit raise reviews at the academic unit level during September and early October, to allow enough time for the Dean’s Office to complete the merit raise review process by mid-November 2019.

Many thanks in advance for your cooperation in this important project.
