Proposals for new faculty searches (tenure-track and clinical-track) for 2020-21 are due to the College by Wednesday, March 25, 2020.  Proposals should be emailed to Brenda Gritsch (brenda-gritsch@uiowa.edu).

The College is asking departments to propose new faculty hires in strategic areas that promote prestigious scholarship, creative activity, and exceptional instruction. Faculty search proposals for 2020-21 should describe the position requested and give a rationale for the position based on the department’s hiring plan and its alignment with Departmental, Collegiate, and University strategic plans. Proposals must contain the following sections:

Part A: Hiring Plans/Strategic Plan Goals

  • Five-year hiring plan (1 page maximum)
  • Template 5 for the Strategic Planning Process (Goals) or Template 6 (if available)
  • An explanation of how the line proposed fits with the Strategic plan of the Department. (1 page maximum)

Part B: Search Proposal (2 pages total)

  1. Position Title (Area) and Rank (Open Rank proposals are acceptable. It is expected that most new faculty will be hired at the Assistant Professor level. Outstanding more senior candidates will be considered depending on the needs and goals of the department.)
  2. Position Description
  3. Desired Scholarly Impact
  4. Impact on Undergraduate Education
  5. Impact on Graduate Education
  6. Please describe the strategies that will be taken to recruit a diverse pool of applicants.  What steps will be taken to reduce implicit bias in the interview process?
  7. (optional) Other Considerations (interdisciplinary connections, external funding opportunities, engagement opportunities, etc.)

Part C: Salary/Start-up Estimates: Identify the office and (if applicable), lab space as well as any start-up or renovation needs.  Use the appropriate Excel form available here. One sheet is for the sciences and other departments where start-up is negotiated, and the other is for the arts, humanities, and other departments with standard start-up. Please also identify a salary range for new Assistant Professors. If the short list of the Department contains individuals who will be hired at a more senior level, the DEO should discuss the salary range with Maggy or Roland. Increases in the preapproved start-up package will only be granted under exceptional circumstances.
