As the semester comes to a close, please remember to report academic undergraduate misconduct as soon as possible, using the procedures below.

Your reports help students to reflect on their actions, with word passing from student to student that misconduct has consequences.

To deepen students’ reflection about integrity, some instructors ask students to sign a short statement before taking a final exam or turning in a paper or project, such as “I do my own work,” followed by the student’s signature. Others refer students to the CLAS Code of Academic Honesty: https://clas.uiowa.edu/students/handbook/academic-fraud-honor-code.

Who Should Report Misconduct?

Any instructor teaching a CLAS course should report academic misconduct. However, TAs generally report academic misconduct to the course supervisor who will take further action.

What do I need to do to send the report to the College?

  1. Email the student about the problem at their uiowa.edu address.
  2. Meet with the student if at all possible to discuss the situation. At the end of the semester, this can be difficult; if there is no response to your email within a reasonable amount of time, continue with the reporting process.
  3. Use the online form to report the incident to the College. Upload any documentation to the form that you might have. Please include your name on the form so we can copy you on our response to the student. Add the supervisor’s name and email address if needed. DEOs, academic advisors, and other instructors or staff are not copied on these responses.

What sanction may an instructor give?

Instructors apply a first-level sanction for misconduct consisting of a grade reduction for the assignment in question, usually a 0 or F. Instructors wishing to apply grading sanctions related to the final course grade should first consult with the College. Instructors may also lessen the sanction by allowing, for example, the student to revise a paper for partial credit.

What sanction does CLAS apply?

CLAS administers a second-level sanction, depending on the number of incidents reported for a student and the seriousness of the incidents.

  • For a first offense, students must complete an online academic integrity seminar. The seminar is not offered by UI and is not credit bearing; it costs $100 and takes around 18 hours to complete. The offense is not visible on the transcript.
  • A hold is put on the student’s future registration until the seminar is completed.
  • For a second offense (or an egregious first offense), a student is suspended for one year. The offense appears on the transcript during the suspension and is then removed.
  • For a third offense (or for a very egregious first offense), a student is expelled. The notation remains permanently on the student transcript.
