The FYS Program is a joint project of the Associate Provost of Undergraduate Education, CLAS, other UI colleges, and the Honors Program, with funding provided by the Provost and administered by University College.

First-Year Seminars introduce entering UI undergraduates to the intellectual life of the University of Iowa, helping students to meet and work with faculty members. Research has shown that engaging with faculty members is a key experience for a student’s success.

CLAS also encourages those proposing a FYS to consider a research-focused offering, introducing students particularly to the UI research/creative mission. For more information, see the links below.

  • The deadline for proposals is Monday, February 4, 2019.
  • For more information and to submit your proposal, visit these page about First-Year Seminars.
  • The requirements for a proposal, which include a syllabus and approval by the DEO, may be found on the above pages.
  • These pages include additional essential FYS policies and procedures as well as important advice for instructors.
  • If a proposal was approved in a previous year, it must be resubmitted and approved for Fall 2019 before the course is offered.

We appreciate your participation in this important program.
