Please consider participating in this important Graduate College initiative to help graduate students achieve success in applying for prestigious external grants to support their research.

2017-18 Fellowship Communities Invitation to Graduate Faculty to Participate:

The Graduate College is offering Fellowships Communities as a resource network to bring together current graduate students applying for nationally competitive fellowships, previous fellowship winners, past reviewers, fellowships advisors, and other support across campus.  Last year’s series of fellowship communities helped us achieve an overall increase in applications to external fellowships.  We will be holding workshops for students September 11-14th.  We would like to invite you (and/or others you know) to join us this year

The time commitment would consist of one 45 minute workshop on one of the following days:

  • Monday, September 11th from 10:30am – 12:00pm, in the UCC conference Area (UUC 2520) (NSF GRFP);
  • Tuesday, September 12th from 10:30am – 12:00pm, in UCC 1117 (AAUW);
  • Wednesday, September 13th from 10:30am – 12:00pm, in room 423 Gilmore Hall (Ford Foundation);
  • Thursday, September 14th from 10:30am – 12:00pm, in room 423 Gilmore Hall (ACLS/Mellon).

During this initial session, you will serve as a panelist and offer your expertise to students in ideation sessions.  (NIH and NSF DDRIG workshops are planned for Spring 2018.)

After this session, we also invite you to become part of our Fellowship Community Contacts group that graduate student applicants can contact with questions about these specific fellowships.  In this role, you would serve as a mentor to applicants at your discretion to the degree that you are able and willing to be involved.  (Example activities include correspondence over email or phone call, meeting in person for coffee, or feedback on materials.)

If you are interested in continuing to participate in the Fellowships Communities for 2017-2018 as a workshop panelist, as a Community Contact person, and/or by receiving e-mail information updates about this year’s events, we invite you to sign up using this Qualtrics site.

Thank you for your support for graduate fellowship applicants!  If you have questions, please contact Graduate College Associate Dean Sarah Larsen (sarah-larsen@uiowa.edu).
