As a reminder, the University of Iowa and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences both require that each organized course has a syllabus.

  • DEOs must review all syllabi to ensure compliance with UI and CLAS policies.
  • This review should be completed before the start of the semester so that needed corrections can be made.
  • Syllabi should be available to students on the course ICON site by the first-class meeting or otherwise given to students by that date.

CLAS Syllabus Insert: Revision
All UI and CLAS information listed at this link (https://clas.uiowa.edu/faculty/required-syllabus-and-syllabus-insert) must appear on the syllabus.

  • Most faculty add this information by attaching the appropriate CLAS insert at the end of the syllabus.

Please note that a revised version of the required UI Free Speech and Expression statement should be added to the syllabus. The syllabus inserts at this page have been updated: https://clas.uiowa.edu/faculty/required-syllabus-and-syllabus-insert, with the revised statement also below:

FREE SPEECH AND EXPRESSION
The University of Iowa supports and upholds the First Amendment protection of freedom of speech and the principles of academic and artistic freedom. We are committed to open inquiry, vigorous debate, and creative expression inside and outside of the classroom. Visit Free Speech at Iowa for more information on the University’s policies on free speech and academic freedom (https://freespeech.uiowa.edu/).

Additional Syllabi Reminders

New students especially find the syllabus confusing and do not realize its importance; thank you for taking time to explain the importance of the syllabus.

Please also call students’ attention to the information on the syllabus insert on the first day of class; this information includes resources related to mental health, for example, as well as the absence policy for military service and holy day obligations, with these policies differing from those related to other absences (https://clas.uiowa.edu/faculty/student-attendance-and-absences).

Any questions related to the undergraduate syllabus should be referred to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education; for questions related to graduate courses, please contact the Associate Dean for Graduate Education.
