As you know, CLAS undergraduate students who entered UI during Summer 2017 and after are held to the General Education (GE) CLAS Core requirement of Diversity and Inclusion (DI).

CLAS still needs additional Diversity and Inclusion courses so that students may fulfill this requirement.

  • A summary of requirements for GE proposals is available here.
  • DI courses do not need to be previously taught since this involves a new GE area.
  • All proposals must give evidence that students have ample opportunities to fulfill the GE CLAS Core comprehensive and DI learning outcomes.
  • All proposals must give evidence that the required course attributes are used.
  • All GE courses must be numbered below 3000.
  • A course already having GE status and proposed as a course with DI status must be renumbered and given a new title to reflect the changes made in the course to meet the Diversity and Inclusion outcomes because of related transfer issues.
  • Proposals for the next academic year are due on September 3, 2018 or on January 16, 2019.
  • A current list of DI courses is available here.

I encourage you to consult with Kathryn Hall in my office while drafting the proposal for GECC.

The Center for Teaching is also available to consult with you about the required GE CLAS Core course attributes and ideas for how to integrate them into your course: Center for Teaching Consultation.

Thank you for your help and for your interest in the General Education CLAS Core.
