• ProSem April 27: Hearing and Aging Research Lab Data Blitz

    April 27, 2018 - 12:00pm

308 Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center

Title: Hearing and Aging Research Lab Data Blitz: Hearing Conservation, Listening Effort, and Hearing Aids

Presenters: Rory Vose, Megan Rossio, Nicholas Giuliani, Soumya Venkitakrishnan, Sieon Kim, and Dana Urbanski

Abstract: This Proseminar consists of six short presentations. The first two presentations will describe the development of an advisory guide that promotes healthy hearing habits for grain and livestock producers (Vose) and the results of an Internet survey that investigates the attitude toward hearing conservation in University of Iowa students (Rossio), respectively. In the third and fourth presentations, studies that examine the effect of stimulus type (vocoded speech vs. speech in noise) on listening effort measured using pupillometry (Giuliani) and explore the feasibility of using automatic facial expression analysis algorithms to evaluate listening effort (Venkitakrishnan) will be reported. Finally, the relationship between the behavior of hearing aid’s automatic directional microphone and user’s listening effort (Kim) and the development of a new non-customized hearing aid fitting scheme that could be used by over-the-counter amplification devices (Urbanski) will be described.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact John A. Williams in advance at 319.335.8718.
