Marcus White is a first-year graduate student in the media studies track at the Department of Communication Studies. His research interest include the role media outlets play in contributing to how people view and educate themselves on civic right and responsibilities.
Before coming to Iowa, Marcus worked as a journalist and newspaper editor in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Idaho. In North Dakota, Marcus won second place from the National Newspaper Association for his investigative series on internal affairs at the Tioga, North Dakota police department in the Bakken Oil Field.
Marcus holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin – Superior. While an undergraduate student, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the award-winning UW-Superior Promethean student newspaper. Under his watch, the paper received several awards from the Associated Collegiate Press and recognition from the Wisconsin chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Marcus was the first Communications student at UW-Superior to be awarded a summer research fellowship from the university, and was mentored by Iowa alum, Dr. Chad Vollrath. Marcus’ research looked at how college level journalism programs approached the topic of digital security in the reporting field.
Marcus also holds awards from North Dakota Newspaper Association and the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association.
