Please join us on Wednesday, October 17 for our next Classics Colloquium of the Fall! Richard Thomas, Professor of Classics at Harvard University and Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor 2018-19 at the University of Iowa, will be giving a talk titled “‘Too Serious to Fool’: The Humor of Bob Dylan” at 5pm in Shambaugh Auditorium. His visit is sponsored by the Department of Classics, the Digital Scholarship and Publishing Studio, the Division of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures, English, and the Musicology area of the School of Music.

Professor Thomas will examine how Bob Dylan’s art has been seen as participating in the tradition of American humor, in connection with Mark Twain & others. This emerges particularly from Dylan’s writing & performing in the period of the Basement Tapes in the late 60s & in his 3-year stint as host of the Theme Time Radio Hour, as well as throughout his songs.

On October 19 at 11:30am in 101 BCSB, the Digital Publishing and Scholarship Studio will also be hosting an event with Professor Thomas titled “Putting the Reds and Greens Online: Digitizing the Loeb Classical Library,” in which we will explore his experience with the digitization of the Loeb Classical Library and discuss the role of digital publications more broadly in academia.
