The Department of Cinematic Arts and the Cinematic Arts Colloquium present: "Romance Tropical"

Friday, April 20, 2018 - 3:30pm to 5:00pm

Romance Tropical

This colloquium event features a talk by Cinematic Arts graduate student Dalina Perdomo on the first Puerto Rican sound film. Romance Tropical (1934), directed by Juan Viguié Cajas, disappeared after its 1934 release, but was rediscovered in the UCLA collection in late 2016, and screened for the first time in over 80 years in late 2017.

This presentation will address the state of early Puerto Rican film history and what it means to resurrect a film of such national importance, especially taking into account that the film’s first screening since 1934 became a fundraiser for the aftermath of Hurricane Maria’s devastating effects to the U.S. territory.
