Sports media, media industries and institutions

My research and teaching focus on the intersections among sport, media, and U.S. culture.  I am particularly interested in television, media industries and institutions, documentary, and the relationship between commerce and cultural value.

I am the author of Keepers of the Flame: NFL Films and the Rise of Sports Media (University of Illinois Press)ESPN: The Making of the Sports Media Empire (University of Illinois Press), and ABC Sports: The Rise and Fall of Network Sports Television (University of California Press)

My current book project, The Boxing Film: A Cultural and Transmedia History, is under contract with Rutgers University Press.  

I have published articles in American Art, Film History, ConvergenceTelevision & New Media, Popular CommunicationCommunication & SportJournal of Sport HistoryInternational Journal of Sport CommunicationJournal of Sports Media, Digital JournalismThe Moving Image, and various edited collections. 

Beyond my scholarship, I have served as a contributor to and source for national and global media outlets that include the New York Times, NPR’s Marketplace, Washington PostWired, and Deadspin.

I am currently serving as associate editor of the Journal of Sport History and co-editor of the University of Illinois Press book series Studies in Sports Media.
