Course Description: As the Affordable Care Act expands health insurance coverage to millions of uninsured Americans and the nation faces crises that include everything from the cost and treatment of aging baby boomers to the obesity epidemic, breaking down the complex health care system to basics is critical. This course breaks health care down to basics. Students will learn how to:

  • Write and communicate about health care service and related medical science in an understandable way for consumers,
  • Understand the relationship between healthcare communication and health literacy, and
  • Determine how better health literacy can empower consumers to be their own best advocates.

Better health care communication and writing can lead to better health literacy and may even save a consumer some money or thier life. To do so, doctors and insurance companies must learn to convey their messages in an easy-to-understand matter. This will lessen publice frustration with a healthcare system that is now almost one-fifth of the U.S. economy.

Course Description: Use of a 10 step strategic planning model to discuss ways that an effective strategic planning process can be developed to effectively respond to a changing environment; strategic planning for an organization, department, specific project, and personal growth; ways that strategic thinking can help develop strategic thinking skills that transfer to any part of a career.
