The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS) congratulated scholarship recipients and thanked the donors who made the awards possible at the 2015 Scholarship Celebration on September 25 in the Iowa Memorial Union.

Thanks to the generosity of scholarship donors who gave through the University of Iowa Foundation, CLAS was able to provide almost $1.1 million in scholarship assistance to more than 200 students this fall. The winners of the awards were chosen by the Scholarship Committee, composed of 17 CLAS faculty and staff from throughout the College, which in 2015 reviewed almost 950 applications.

The Scholarship Celebration honored not just these specific students and donors, but also the very idea of scholarships. As Helena Dettmer, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs & Curriculum, noted at the event, "It is inspiring and heartwarming to know that people invest in the educational success of young scholars. These donors know that their support is an investment that will return extraordinary dividends—for each student who finds his or her passion at the University of Iowa and works hard to succeed will go on to make our world a better place through their citizenship and leadership."

In addition to the celebration's host, Dean Dettmer, speakers included Maddie Bro, Class of 2016, who is majoring in Journalism & Mass Communication and Gender, Women's & Sexuality Studies, and is also pursuing the Certificate in Fundraising & Philanthropy Communication; Nate Hua, Class of 2016, a pre-med Chemistry major with minors in English and Theatre Arts; and Gerhard "Jerry" Loewenberg, CLAS Dean Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Political Science, and benefactor of a scholarship established in his honor and sustained by his wife and him.

Bro, a varsity Hawkeye swimmer, is a recipient of the Bill and John Fenton Scholarship, and Hua is a recipient of the Shoemaker-Strickler Memorial Scholarship. Both are active in the UI Honors Program.
