Heimer selected as Fellow of American Society of Criminology

Professor Karen HeimerKaren Heimer, professor and chair of the Department of Sociology in the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, has been selected as a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology (ASC). She will be formally recognized by ASC at its annual meeting in November, 2015.

The title of "Fellow" is given to members of ASC who have achieved distinction in criminology. The title recognizes persons who have made a scholarly contribution to the intellectual life of the discipline, whether in the form of a singular, major piece of scholarship or cumulative scholarly contributions. In addition, a Fellow must have made a significant contribution to the field through the career development of other criminologists and/or through organizational activities within the ASC.

Heimer, who earned the PhD in sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989, joined the UI faculty in 1991. In addition to her position in the Department of Sociology, she also holds an appointment in the Department of Gender, Women's & Sexuality Studies.


The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers about 70 majors across the humanities; fine, performing and literary arts; natural and mathematical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and communication disciplines. About 15,000 undergraduate and nearly 2,000 graduate students study each year in the college’s 37 departments, led by faculty at the forefront of teaching and research in their disciplines. The college teaches all Iowa undergraduates through the college's general education program, CLAS CORE. About 80 percent of all Iowa undergraduates begin their academic journey in CLAS. The college confers about 60 percent of the university's bachelor's degrees each academic year.
