Deborah Whaley's book selected for AAUP 2016 Book, Jacket, & Journal Show

Associate professor recognized in the Scholarly Illustrated category for "Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime"

Cover of "Black Women in Sequence"Associate Professor of American Studies and African American Studies Deborah Elizabeth Whaley's book, Black Women in Sequence: Re-inking Comics, Graphic Novels, and Anime, was published by the University of Washington Press in November 2015, to acclaim from academics and comic lovers. The book is the first scholarly study of black women in comic art.

Now the book has won a spot in the Scholarly Illustrated category of the 2016 AAUP Book, Jacket, & Journal Show. Jurors selected the cover as an example of outstanding design. The show will take place in June 2016 in Philadelphia, and then the exhibition will tour the country through May 2017.

The AAUP is an organization of nonprofit publishers whose members strive to advance scholarship through their offerings. The Association’s mission is to assist its members through professional education, cooperative services, and public advocacy.


The University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers about 70 majors across the humanities; fine, performing and literary arts; natural and mathematical sciences; social and behavioral sciences; and communication disciplines.
